The installation of Pella windows is quick and easy to do yourself

If you have been living in your property for a number of years, or indeed if you have just purchased a new place, then you may wish to upgrade several features in the place. One of these areas is the windows. It has always been said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and the same can be said for a house, where the windows are the way to see into the heart of the house, and show how pristine the inside can be when the outside sparkles. When upgrading these windows, the installation of Pella glass can be beneficial to the look and feel of you home.

Fitting this type of window should be relatively easy, as the quality appears to be of a high standard that is easily manageable and quick to maneuver into spaces that have been designed specifically for the purpose of intention. Because of this, your preparations are a must to ensure that the wall will hold the window successfully and will not result in any injuries from mismatched fixtures.

With luck, the first stage in setting up the glass has already been completed, and the measurements are already secured, as the opening that needs to be created should be snug enough to slot the window into, complete with all the additional parts that may be needed. It may be helpful with the Pella window to note the sticker on the pane, as this will indicate the size of the hole. When the opening is cut out, the other parts will need to be added prior to the actual glass being placed, such as the rubber seal around the sill that will ensure the correct flow of condensation. This is sometimes heard as a hissing sound as the window is closed, for the air and water escapes under the flashing.

If the installation has run smoothly, then the window will be in a position to be nailed and fully finished into the wall of the property. If you are undertaking this project, then you may wish to check the spacing of the nails, and that the operation of the window is precisely as it is intended for. Otherwise you may have to find a troubleshooting guide in the installation manual to find a suitable solution to any problems that may arise on any other steps you have followed. If all has gone well, and the glass is sufficiently nailed into the seal, then you have almost completed the installation.

The final step that should be following on from this is the external flashing that prevents water from entering the property, as this will ensure that your home stays mostly draught and damp free. Once these final touches are completed, then you are free to admire your Pella windows, and smile even if you do not feel the envy of your neighborhood. The understanding that you are able to undertake such a tiresome project and complete it perfectly should be more than enough reward.

Things You Need to Know When Opting for a White Table Lamp

White is always an option for minimalists. A white table lamp is a smart, but a bold taste. Being a neutral color, white will definitely work with any color and will soften things up. It may be enlightening to note that the definition and appeal should come from the other aspects like the shapes, surfaces, shadows and texture. For instance, a white lamp with a matte surface spreads light in many directions, creating a velvety mood. Whereas, a glossy ceramic lamp will animate the room since it would make the light to appears as if the light was dancing.

Aside from these attributes, the type of lamp also has a sizeable effect on the overall outcome and can either enhance or extinguish the design factor of the room. The white glass sort is a source of modernity. The steel is a look with a modern, minimalistic feel, while the one with the wooden base is perfect for those living in the country sides or for resorts where the primary theme is chilling. Utilize a taste of the equator with mosaic covered furniture

If you wish for your decorations to be truly unique, you may wish to try your hand at an ancient art. No design will be the same with this form of design, and there are numerous combinations of colors and materials that can be chosen in order to modernize areas of your home. Mosaic covered furniture is fast becoming popular across the nation, and as such is a fun and amazing project for either you or your whole family to undertake.

If you find that a piece of furniture is looking a little plain and you are at a loss of how to vamp it up, you could try painting it a vibrant color or adding a new material as a cover. However, this may be something that you have done previously. Because of this, you will be looking for something new as a project that will both bring people together, and allow them to discuss how unique it is.

All you will need in a mosaic project is different colored tiles, or even a large piece of wood or glass that can be broken into smaller parts, in order to alter the look and feel of an area of your home. Of course, if you are opting for the latter in creating the small tiles, then it is wise to be wary of any shards that may fly out, and ensure your safety before embarking on your task.

Many montages are created purely at random, with no schemes or styles that flow. Due to this, you may wish to randomly begin attaching the tiles to the work surface you are upgrading. Otherwise, deciding upon a color scheme or picture to recreate will need to be complete before the other tasks can be finalized, as it may be time consuming. However, the finished project will look divine, so the hard work will have paid off. You should also be thinking about the location of your image, as a planned pattern or image should be sketched out onto the surface to ensure accuracy in your art work.

Making sure that the surface is smooth and clean, your chosen textiles should be laid out in the manner you have chosen and then fully set before adding any finishing touches or grouting the design to ensure that it is secure on the work surface. In addition, your tiles should be sealed in order to preserve their quality, and if you are creating a new face for a work top where food is prepared, then you should ensure that it has been cleansed fully for hygienic purposes.

Your new piece of furniture should stand proudly in the room it is meant for, and once you have finished that project, you may wish to tackle other areas in your home. Table tops, mantelpieces, floors, mirrors, chair backs, or even art pieces that hang on the wall. There are no set rules to these projects, and you can always find inspiration in the unlikeliest of places.

Utilizing a fragrant lavender wand to enrich your home

When you are sitting at home relaxing and enjoying a cup of tea, you do not wish to be assaulted with the smell of take out, or sweaty socks. Air fresheners will work to take off the most pungent of odors, but will generally not leave your house feeling fresh and clean. Lavender has long been known as a herb that is strong and subtle, enriching the home with a fantastic smell that lingers for many hours. Due to this, you may want to invest in a fragrant lavender wand to use in your home and closet to utilizing the freshening qualities.

The purpose of a lavender wand is that as the strands of lavender are rubbed together, their strands end up breaking down, and the aromas are released into the atmosphere. By collecting these strands and placing them in an area where the smells may be less than pleasant, the neutralizing effect of the lavender leaves collects the unpleasant smells and holds them, while releasing the vapors of the plant. In this way, your dog basket or your laundry closet will rarely smell musty.

To create your wand, or indeed create several of them to distribute among friends or place in closets and drawers, all you need to do is collect some lavender strands and tie them together with a piece of ribbon. As simple as that, there is nothing left to do but wait for the fantastic smell to permeate your home and cause random bursts of lavender fragrance when you least expect it.

There are many other wonderful uses for a bunch of lavender. It can be dipped in a large pan of toffee solution to give your sweets a flowery flavor, or it can be hung on a wreath at a festival time in order to alter your senses at the joyous time. They can also be used for meditation and smudging purposes, where the whole house is blessed with positive energy and your inner being is able to focus on what is truly important due to the removal of many external influences that have plagued your mind during that day.

Many people have used lavender in varying forms over the years as a way of blocking out unnecessary smelss invading their noses. They also use it in cooking, or in religious ceremonies, as this is a potent herb that carries many connotations and uses. This does not detract from the causes of any smells that invade your home, and is necessary to first eliminate these from your house in order to minimize the effects they will have before resorting to additional fragrances to include into your cleaning routine. However, purely by placing the lavender in a window, you allow the wind to carry the scent across the house. In this way, it can be placed in a variety of mediums outside of the traditional, and fully incorporated into your daily routine. Of course, it is always wise to only use as much as you need.

Framing a hip roof to withstand a tornado

In many cities of the United States, precautions have been set in place to prevent the immense onslaught a tornado offers. Bunkers have been dug out, masts have been erected that can detect the movement earlier on in the path, and alert posts have been created in order to reach the largest amount of citizens in the shortest space of time. Because of this, one of the designs that give the town an added edge over the wrath of the tornado is the framing of a hip roof. The sleek and aerodynamic design adds support and practicality in order to allow the vigorous winds to simply skim over the rigid structures before being dispersed into the environment.

A hip roof is one of the more popular designs that have been created in several new areas, especially those that are often conflicting with severe weather warning circulating the rural outskirts. They also provide a unique architectural awareness of the house and the surroundings by altering how the roof is erected. This in turn will define the look of the house, as there are many variants on the theme that alter how the roof will stand against a tornado or other strong winds. When creating a hip roof, the four components that allow for a smooth rising will be integral to implementing your new design.

These four components are the ridge board, which serves as the basic framework that holds the roof together, the common rafters that support the frame towards the eaves, the hip rafters that join the ceiling joists to the common rafters, and finally the jack rafters that support the hips into the eaves and across the joints.  With these components, the roof will be stable and fully supported, but will allow for a smaller roof height and a gentler slope.

Building your own roof will often be time consuming. The amount of measuring out will be extensive, but if you are determined, then there are some simple steps that can make your project much easier, especially if you have ensured that all the measurements are carried out to the letter, as there will be very little maneuvering room when you begin. If the ridge board is created properly, and the rafters and joints are fully secure, then your roof will take shape much easier, so the affixing moment will come quicker. The eaves on a hip roof will also have to be thought out, as they are fully curved in order to maximize the insulation that this form of low roof provides.

This form of low roof does have its disadvantages. There will be less room for maneuver, and many of the spaces that have been utilized are taken up with heavy joists. However, when you are able to look past this minor infraction, you begin to see how you are able to alter the space around so you have a workable environment that is both aesthetically pleasing on the outside, and a blank canvas on the inside.

Home improvement survival techniques

What you don’t want from a home improvement experience is the frustration of endless problems that finally reduce you to tears and wearing a T-shirt that says “I didn’t survive home improvement”. If you’re going to be undertaking or even going to be remotely associated with the trials of a home improvement job, it’s best that you mentally prepare yourself with some survival techniques unique to the urban domestic jungle – Indy-style.

The key here is preparation married to expectation. When you’re looking at a project on paper or even seeing the desired results in your mind’s eye, the excitement is high, as is the expectation. However, if you rein your emotions in and look at it from a more practical and mundane viewpoint, you’ll see lots of areas where a little bit of additional preparation can save you tons of trouble and loads of rubble along the way. Take bathroom remodeling as an example: you might think that it shouldn’t take more than a week or two. Now imagine this – the tiles have been ripped out, the faucets removed and the pipes temporarily sealed, and you get a call from a nonchalant contractor who says that the tiles are back ordered until after Christmas. What now? Do you blow your top and yell at the contractor, while continuing to use six to a bathroom until January rolls around, or do you order a color that you hate and get the job done within the stipulated time? Choices and situations such as these will abound during your home improvement project, however small. If you’re mentally prepared and expect the worst, then you may not have to wake up at night screaming and sweating.

Often, the only thing between you and a straightjacket is the thought of the final result that you’re so looking forward to; the sweet release that only a job well done can give you. Preparation will be required in several areas. First, be prepared for additional costs – you might find that the alteration you wanted actually required tearing down a portion of the wall for the power supply. Second, be prepared for debris, and lots of it. Rare is the home improvement project that can be done without unbelievable amounts of this fun stuff that can clog up every single orifice in your home that’s too small to even let an ant through. Third, be prepared to compromise on the fly – often, the materials that you ordered will strangely be the only consignment that got lost at sea or attacked by road pirates in transit. Fourth, be prepared for inconveniences ranging from not being able to use the bathrooms, to not having hot water for a week, to not being able to park your car in your garage, to not being able to have a private conversation without going into the closet and turning on the radio really loud like in those old espionage movies.

As far as expectations go, you can lighten your load by working closely with the contractor; he’s the best judge of what to expect, so respect his knowledge and submit to his superior experience. This will often make the contractor to soften up towards you and even let you in on a few trade secrets. Surviving home improvement is not about evasive action – it’s about trying to be included in the decision-making process of an experienced contractor. If you know exactly how his mind works, and what his plans are, you’re less likely to be surprised by a sudden move on his part.

A large part of having the right expectations set is in the negotiation process with potential contractors. Research well, and even visit some current projects to see if you’re comfortable with how organized they are – these are things that are not covered in the contract, but very important to your peace of mind. A good contractor will be only too eager to give you references and even help you contact them to see what they think of him.

Finally, a sage word to the home improvement novice – be realistic. All that you’ve done towards preparation and setting the right expectations can’t help you – they’re merely home improvement survival techniques – unless you allow reasonable margins for each calculation you’re not going to be a happy homeowner no matter how many techniques you have up your sleeve. And last but not least by any means, when all else fails, take a drink of water, count to ten, and breathe.

How to Make Unlined Curtains

Unlined curtains are the simplest form of window covering to make. If you are unsure of your skills or are tackling home furnishings for the first time, this is a good place to start.

Preparation

Estimate the number of widths of fabric you will need for each curtain (very fine fabrics should be three times fullness). Calculate the finished drop and add 16cm for the hem plus the allowance for your chosen heading.

Making Up

1. Cut out the lengths. Trim away selvedges and any writing on the seam. Join widths with a French seam.

2. Working on a flat surface, turn in both side edges 6cm to the wrong side. Press. Re-open the turnings and fold in half to give 3cm (1 1/4 in) turnings. Pin and press. Turn up the hem 16cm. Press. Re-open and fold in half as before. Pin and press.

3. To mitre the corner:

a) Position a temporary pin exactly through the point of the corner.

b) Open out all folds and fold the corner inwards level with the pin. Re-fold so that the inside folds of both side and hem turnings will meet to form an angled mitre. Press lightly.

c) Re-fold the sides and hem along the pressed lines. Make sure that the pin is still on the point and the fabric is lying flat inside. Pin and press.

4. Neatly slip stitch both sides and hem, inserting a fabric weight at each corner and seam. Stitch the mitre with tiny neat ladder stitches.

5. Lie the curtain on a flat surface, wrong side up, making sure that there are no creases in the fabric. From the hem, using a long ruler, measure your finished drop and mark with a pin. Repeat this six times across each width of fabric. Mark this line with a tacking thread and make your chosen heading.

Adding cabinets in the kitchen

Every person remodels their home every once in awhile and in different ways. Some people decide to add kitchen cabinets to give their kitchen a new look. It does not take months when you are remodeling a kitchen to add kitchen cabinets as long as you know what you’re doing and know what to look for. Every kitchen cabinet has a different and specific size and place that it can go in the kitchen. When you are looking for kitchen cabinets it is important to make sure you know the exact size and style you’re looking for because there are many choose from. When you are installing kitchen cabinets to remodel the room here are a few suggestions you might want to take into consideration so that you do not spend more money than you need to but still get the great design you’re looking for in a space that you have.

One thing that you have to take into consideration when you are trying to choose the right cabinets for a kitchen is the amount of space that you have to install these cabinets. Since every different style of cabinetry has a different shape and size you have to be well aware of everything that you purchase to make sure that is going to fit in the area in your kitchen. You cannot just fit any old cabinet into the location in your kitchen otherwise you’ll run out of room and you will not be able to walk around. Make sure that you are able to get the appropriate size cabinets when you are remodeling your kitchen so that you have adequate space between all of your appliances but still be able to store things and get into your cabinets as well.

Another thing that you have to consider when you are installing new kitchen cabinets is how tall you want them. Some people decide to go all way to the ceiling with the kitchen cabinets because it will give them more space to store mixers and other small gadgets that you use in the kitchen every day. This will give you a lot more space than most people think because you’ll have more space to store things off the counters. The only thing that you have to remember when you install kitchen cabinets to the ceiling is you have to be able to reach everything that you put in there.

Before you decide on any kitchen cabinetry you just want to sit back and think about what kind of cabinets you want to add to your kitchen. Take some time and look through some books in order to make sure that you’re getting the best design and style you want for your kitchen.

Flower cutting and cultivation tips

Iris
Varieties good for cutting are magnolias, the luxurious waxy flowers are all beautiful for cutting. M.denudata is one of my favorites, once established you will get a dense covering of natural white super fragrant flowers.

Cultivation tips for magnolias, they need shelter from strong winds and like the sun, but can tolerate partial shade, soil ph should be neutral, the soil needs to be deep and must have good water retention, but not spongy. Best time to plant is in late spring

Cardamine
Varieties that are very good for picking from early spring are C.pratensis, the subtle pink shades of the cuckoo flower mix beautifully with bluebells. These splendid flowers grow naturally but I prefer to grow my own.

Cardamine cultivation, they just love the sun but can also thrive in semi-shade. They can tolerate a wide range of Soil ph (Acidic through to Alkali) but the soil must be moist or wet. Propagations tips, propagate from seed in spring or by division in autumn.

Pulsatilla
Varieties good for cutting are P.vulgaris or P.vernalis. These amazing pasque flowers are very exotic and have a sexy purple coloring, there are of course other colors available, but I prefer the purple.

Cultivation, they need the sun and can be slightly temperamental in shade conditions, the soil needs to be well drained calcareous (containing chalk). Propagate from root cutting in winter or fresh seed in late spring.

Arctotis Fastuosa – monarch of the veldt
Varieties that are good for cutting are the Vendidium fastuosum. This bright orange daisy with black markings on the petals and a chocolate center is one of my favorites, this variety lasts about twice as long in water as a marigold
Conditioning, strip off the bottom leaves. Cultivation, grow them in super drained sandy soil in non shady conditions.

If you’re seriously interested in knowing about Bulb Flowers, you need to think beyond the basics. This informative article takes a closer look at things you need to know about Bulb Flowers.

Once you begin to move beyond basic background information, you begin to realize that there’s more to Bulb Flowers than you may have first thought.

Just about every flower gardener will work with bulb plants at one time or another. Bulbs are loved by gardeners for the ease with which they grow, their hardiness and the fact that they can bloom again and again for many consecutive seasons without the need to replant. With all these advantages, it is no wonder that bulb plants are so popular among both new and experienced gardeners.

Choosing the right bulbs, however, is one thing that many beginning gardeners have trouble with. After you develop and eye and feel for finding the best bulbs, however, you will be able to spot them from across the garden center.

When choosing bulbs for your garden, it is important to choose the firmest and largest bulbs. The size of the bulb is important, since large bulbs are more likely to provide many blooms. The firmness of the bulb is a good indication of its health, and bulbs that are soft or mushy are unlikely to bloom. Bulbs are particularly susceptible to water damage. It is important to choose a bulb that is not to soft, but it is also important to look for cracks or scars. Bulbs with cracks or scars may have become too dry to bloom. Likewise, any bulbs that have begun to spout roots should be avoided, as they are unlikely to bloom properly once planted.

How bulbs are planted in the garden is important as well. Most bulbs are best planted in the fall, most commonly in early to mid October. The goal is to get the bulbs into the ground six weeks before the ground begins to freeze, so obviously the best time to plant will vary from location to location.

Bulbs should be planted in a well prepared soil, and the depth they should be planted will be determined by the type of bulb. For example, crocus bulbs are generally planted four inches deep, daffodil and hyacinth bulbs six inches deep and tulip bulbs at a depth of eight inches.

A simple gardening tool called a bulb planter is great for achieving a more uniform look to the blooming garden. Bulb planters can be used to easily prepare perfect looking rows of flowers. Those gardneres who prefer a more wild and freewheeling look, on the other hand, often dig a single hole and plant several bulbs in it. This approach can lead to spectacular, if somewhat unpredictable, patterns once the bulbs begin to bloom.

It is important to use a small amount of fertilizer at the bottom of each hole you dig when planting bulbs. The fertilizer should then be topped with a thin layer of soil, and the bulb carefully placed on top of the soil. It is important not to place the bulb directly on top of the fertilizer, as doing so could damage the bulb. Bulbs are always planted with the pointed end stick up and the flat, rooted side lying on top of the layer of soil. After the bulbs are in place, the rest of the hole should be filled with soil and the garden should be given a thorough watering.

Even though bulbs are among the hardiest of garden plants, there are a few important things to remember. One important technique to become familiar with is deadheading. The term deadheading should already be familiar to those gardeners who work with perennials. Deadheading is simply removing spent blooms in order to encourage more blossoms to develop. This process is important with bulb plants as well. When working with bulbs, however, it is important not to remove the leaves from the plants until the leaves have begun turning brown.

Taking care of the bulbs over the winter is important as well. In warmer climates, many bulbs can remain in the ground over winter. It is important, however, to remove tender bulbs such as dahlias, even in warmer climates. These bulbs should be stored over the winter in a cool, dry location.

Bulbs are wonderful plants for any gardener, from the newest to the most experienced. Their combination of hardiness, color and beauty make them hard to beat for any flower enthusiast.

Take time to consider the points presented above. What you learn may help you overcome your hesitation to take action.

Choosing The Best Plants For Your Garden

Excited, that’s how you felt when you saw that space in your backyard. And you bought some plants, but without even considering first what kind of soil you have at your garden, or perhaps, without planning carefully what kind of plants will survive. Now your garden is a mess. Think it over.

Before buying plants you should be attentive of where are you going to place the plants in the garden – shade-loving plants for the sheltered areas, sun-lovers for the warm spots, drought-resistant plants for the parched areas which may be either sunny or shaded, and swamp plants for the poorly-drained parts. Once you decided with your selections it is time to choose how you are going to position them in your garden.

Take a look at these pointers:

What to plant

Do you want fruits, vegetables, flowers? Remember to start small; you can always increase the size of your garden if you choose to. But do it gradually. This is particularly important if you’re in a budget, of course.

Test your soil first, to determine the pH level of your soil and what kind of nutrients you need to add. You can alter the garden soil’s pH. However, it is a lot easier to maintain a garden without having to alter it’s soil’s pH level. This calls for choosing plants that will survive with the kind of pH your garden soil has.

Plant in groups

One good rule of the green thumb is to buy at least one of the many varieties of small plants. However, a “one of everything” method of plant selection tends to make the garden seem spotty whereas plants placed in groups makes it more organized.

Positioning the Plants

Before planting your chosen plants, you can either let them be in their pots first and arrange them according to how you plan to position them in your garden. Grouping plants in sets of threes or fives usually looks better than planting in groups of even numbers. Be sure that you have an interesting combination of colors and textures of plants.

Color of the plants

The right color scheme is one way to maintain the harmonious ambience in your garden. Imagine the color of the flowers when they are in bloom. Some plants may have flowers that would not look good with other flowers but they can be planted alongside if they have different blooming season. Foliage color does not have to be confined to green. Look for plants that have other colors for their leaves if it such suits your taste.

Buying a Home Office Furniture

Working at home is becoming a common trend in a lot of
fields nowadays. A lot of people prefer this kind of set-up
because they can have flexible work schedules and
work-at-home parents can have more time with their
children.

But when meeting clients, they cannot entertain them in
their living rooms which is why having a home office is
essential.

Home offices are usually small since most of the actual
space is dedicated to the house itself. But being small
doesn’t mean that the office has to look drab.

It still has to create a good impression on every client
who walks in there. It is therefore important to have at
least decent pieces of furniture in a home office.

Creating a good impression doesn’t mean that the furniture
has to be pricey. To people who work at home, the budget is
tighter than big offices which is why price will play an
important role when buying a home office furniture.

Another consideration is that the furniture has to be
compact. As mentioned earlier, home offices are usually
small which is why getting a space-saving furniture is a
better option than full-sized ones.

Also, the furniture in a home office should reflect the
image of the person’s work. Since he/she is working at
home, serious-looking furniture has to be turned down in
favor of homey-looking ones which border on the
professional.

The demands of a home office in terms of the furniture may
not be as great as compared to its larger counterparts, but
they usually have the same set of considerations like the
price, function and the image of the office that they help
create.

Bonsai Plant Care

Bonsai plants are very similar to Bonsai trees in so far as if you give them a lot of care and attention and keep them healthy you will get a beautiful miniature plant in return. There are many different varieties of plant that you can use to create Bonsai plants. Some plants require very precise care routines to maintain a healthy and aesthetically pleasing plant, but regardless of what breed of plant you are using there are some basic guidelines to follow that will keep your plant in condition. All of these tips will be dependant on the type of plant you buy but are meant as rough guides only.

Temperature.

Indoor Bonsai plants will need protection from the elements during cold weather because many of them are tropical or subtropical plants. The singly most effective form of protection is bringing them indoors. However, if you are planting your Bonsai outdoors you should plant them somewhere where they are protected from wintry conditions. Alternatively it does a plant a lot of good if you put them out for some warm weather when the risk of frost is gone completely. The humidity indoors can cause dehydration of Bonsai plants, which is the biggest killer of these timid plants.

Watering.

It is important to water Bonsai early in the day before the temperature lowers in the evening. The type of plant you have will determine the watering regime you need to undertake. How much moisture the plant needs is a very important factor and you should always water the soil as thoroughly as possible to ensure that all the roots get a good watering.

Light.

Because the sun is at it’s brightest and strongest between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. you should try as far as possible to keep your Bonsai out of the sunlight between these hours. It is also important to remember that electrical items around the house give off a very humid heat that can damage not only the leaves of you Bonsai but can also dehydrate your plants or trees and eventually kill them. It’s also important to alter your watering schedule to meet the demands of increased light, heat and humidity.

Fertilizing.

You can use fertilizers to help the growth of your Bonsai plants, but it’s best to use mild ones that only contain trace elements. Trees are usually fed during the growing season to help with their growth and shouldn’t be used in either plants or trees during dormant growth periods.

Welding Basics For Beginners

Welding has been around for centuries, though not in the forms most commonly used today. One of the first welding processes ever used was known as forge welding. Forge welding attempts to join two metals through a process of heating, and then pounding and striking. It’s what blacksmiths did. But since then, there have been quite a few advancements in the welding world. With these new methods and techniques, welding has left the confines of industrial settings and can now be done practically anywhere – even underwater or in outer space!

As you can guess from the history of welding, the ability to join two or more pieces of metal together in a strong bond has been fundamental in our advancements in all areas of life, from housing to transportation; from manufacturing to repairs. Understanding welding basics can come in handy at work, but it will just as often come in handy around the house, in the workshop or on the farm. Because of this, welding is a skill that almost anyone can benefit from, male or female, young or old.

Why Weld?
If you own any equipment or machinery that is metal, welding will certainly serve as a useful skill. Some typical goals of a welding job include:

• Fixing stress cracks
• Reinforcing weak joints, and
• Cutting/shaping new parts and adapters from raw plating.

For chores like these, many welders rely on a process known as arc welding. Arc welding is a method where during the welding process, an electrical current jumps through an air gap (between a positively charged electrode and a negatively charged steel plate) and produces an enormous amount of heat. This heat is produced at the end of a welding rod, and when it does, metal can be melted. Well, it’s a little more complicated than that, but the concept is the same.

Perhaps the most common and economical welding method used today is AC (alternating current) arc welding. You can locate a simple AC welder just about anywhere, such as your local farm store or home improvement center. This welding process is ideal for most of your simple, routine welding jobs. Therefore, AC arc welding is ideal for those of you just starting out.

Minimize Your Risk
While arc welding isn’t incredibly complicated, there are a few risks and hazards that you should be aware of:

1. Exposure to radiation
2. Flying sparks (in the form of globs of molten metal)
3. Electric Shock
4. Fumes
5. Damage to your eyes, and
6. Burns

However, by wearing protective clothing and specialized welding helmets and other gear, you can greatly reduce the inherent risks of welding. Here are a few other tips to help keep you safe while arc welding:

• Make sure to work on a dry floor. Wear thick rubber shoes and dry leather welding gloves.
• Be sure to use insulated electrode holders.
• Check to make sure that your equipment is all properly grounded.
• Keep your work area properly ventilated to avoid inhaling any potentially toxic fumes.
• Be on the look out for flying bits of melted metal.
• Most importantly, be aware of any other people who are around you. If they aren’t wearing the proper gear, then keep them away from your project.

This will get you started welding safely – one of the most important things when learning a new craft.

Bird Twig Wreath

This is a very attractive wreath and a very popular one. You will want to gather a supply of twigs which are long, thin and pliable. You will also need craft wire, 22 to 24 gauge, wire cutters, a glue gun, glue sticks and a wreath base. You will also want some bird picks, the choice is yours, an artificial birds’ nest, wooden eggs, small ones, and a large ribbon.

You will want to cut the twigs into about ten inch lengths. Take a handful of twigs, choosing an amount that seems right to you, bind them firmly together and cut the wire, securing it and then tucking it into the twig bunch which you have just created. Continue this until you have created what you feel are enough bunches to cover your wreath base. Take a wreath bunch and fasten it securely to the wreath bases with craft wire. Continue this until you have completely covered the wreath base. Cut the craft wire and secure it firmly into the wreath.

Now you will want to take the birds’ nest and secure it firmly to the wreath. Take a ten inch piece of craft wire and fold it into a “U” shape. Poke this thru the back of the birds’ nest then stick the ends of the wires through the twig bunches at the bottom of the wreath and secure the wires firmly to the wreath base, tucking them in so that they are completely covered by the twig bunches. Now hot glue the nest to the wreath bunches to give it added security and stability.

Next glue the artificial eggs into the birds’ nest. Depending upon the breed of the bird which you have chosen, you may or may not want to paint the eggs first.

Now take your bird picks and place them where you would like them on the wreath. You may also want to use your glue gun and glue to make sure that they are securely attached.

Take your ribbon and form a large bow and glue it securely to the top of your twig wreath. You now have a beautiful twig wreath, which can be used at any time of the year. I hope you will enjoy it and take pride in your work.

Using Mirrors To Open Up A Home

Many people are shocked when they first begin home shopping. Homes today are built smaller with compact rooms. The trend for building as many homes as possible in any given area is resulting in tiny rooms with little character. A homeowner however can use decorative pieces such as mirrors to help open up their space. If you are interesting in adding depth or openness to your home, consider using these tips.

If you have a rectangular or square room that seems a little too boxy for you, you can use mirrors on the wall to help open it up. You can place a mirror on a wall above your sofa to start. Make sure the mirror is at least a medium sized piece. Using smaller mirrors may only make things worse. You can choose to use only one, or you can choose to use one on the wall directly across from the first mirror as well.

Narrow hallways are a big problem for a lot of homeowners. To make a hallway look wider, consider adding a mirror to the end of the hall. For an even more dramatic effect, try adding a whole wall of mirrors at the end of the hallway. Using mirrors all over the way is a great way to open up the space with ease. This is a rather inexpensive way to totally change the way your hallway looks.

Using mirrors in a small bathroom is the perfect way to brighten up the space. Use a mirror on both walls to get a great look at your total body as well. If you want to see the back of your outfit or your hair, you will be able to do so when you place mirrors strategically. You might not want to mirror an entire wall however in this room of your home because you will find yourself cleaning it much more often than if it were somewhere else in your home. Bathroom mirrors get water spots and dirt on them much more easily.

Opening up a home by strategically placing mirrors throughout the areas is a great way to add design as well as function. You will love the openness a mirror will bring. It will allow you to create spaces that look sophisticated and roomy, even when the rooms are tiny. You can find mirrors at most home décor stores. Home improvement stores and discount stores are also great places to look.
